India abstains
India has informed the United Nations Human Rights Council that Sri Lanka must call for immediate elections to activate Provincial Councils, and should also implement the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
India made the statement, after the vote on the resolution against Sri Lanka was adopted at the 46th session of the UNHRC today, with 22 countries voting in favour and 11 voting against.
Delivering the statement, India said it believes in the primary responsibility of States for the promotion and protection of human rights and constructive international dialogue and cooperation guided by the principles and purposes of the UN Charter in support of such efforts.
“As an immediate neighbour, India has contributed to the relief, resettlement, rehabilitation and reconstruction process in Sri Lanka after 2009. Our development assistance has focused on the restoration of livelihoods and economic revival, especially in Sri Lanka’s Northern and Eastern Provinces,” India further said.
